WJS Campus

The Campus

At WJS we are very proud of our school campus as we have a variety of buildings that, although are not new buildings, are well maintained, and provide us with a wealth of space and, as a result, are put to very good use. The campus itself comprises of the main school building, the ‘Engineering Hub’, and ‘The Studio’, together with two playgrounds and a staff car park. High speed wireless Internet is available throughout our campus with Interactive screens in all classrooms and in the Computing Suite.

The main school building comprises of a welcoming reception area; general office; Executive Headteacher and Deputy/Assisttant Headteacher offices; medical room; staff room; Pastoral Team/Conference/Meeting room (Rainbow Room); Business Managers Office; two small group teaching rooms, whole school hall with stage and inside PE facilities; Le Bistro dining area (inside and outside provision), school kitchen and twelve classrooms and adult, upper and lower Key Stage toilet blocks, including disabled facilities.

The Engineering Hub is currently shared with the Winterton Children’s Centre who are sited on the ground floor. Our computing suite is housed in the upper floor of this building together with an engineering room used for teaching areas of the curriculum including Cooking and Design Technology. Additionally, there is a training kitchen; several offices and group learning areas.

‘The Studio’ building is used during the day, for learning associated with the ‘Arts’, and by the local Youth Club on some evenings. There is a sound proof music room, used for peripatetic and whole class music lessons; a kitchen; a drama/dance studio; a ‘wet’ area suitable for fine art sessions and a recreational area which may be used by Year 6 as a common room at playtimes. As a school, we are currently chasing a variety of funding streams to enable us to improve this building and bring it in line with the condition of the rest of the school, as it is currently ‘very tired’ internally and in need of refurbishment. This is an on-going project, which is very dear to our hearts, and it will be an amazing community facility once it has received the ‘makeover’ it deserves!

We have a large, main playground, which has a trim trail, climbing frame, playground markings, gazebo together with picnic tables and benches, and an artificial grassed area. There is also a raised, ‘quiet’ garden – “Kathryn’s Corner” – dedicated to, and in memory of, Kathryn Hawley, a former pupil of WJS which also includes ‘Incredible Edible’ raised beds from which our community are encouraged to share produce grown there by WJS Gardening Club.  Three year groups play comfortably and safely at playtimes and lunch times within this main playground on a daily basis. We also have a second, smaller playground, which again has playground markings; climbing frame, artificial grass and gazebo with an area specifically designated for ball games. There is also a quiet, garden area adjacent to this playground together with picnic tables and benches.

As we do not have a school field, we use the Winterton Community Academy sports field, which is a five-minute walk away and provides us with excellent grassed sports facilities.

As space is at a premium, only staff and visitors through prior arrangement use the school car park. However, there is also a disabled parking space available. All areas of the school campus are kept safely secure throughout the school day and visitors may only access the school through the Reception area and in line with school policy and procedures.
